Commemoration of the 161st Anniversary of Indentured workers arriving to South Africa
A living monument to a peoples' history, the 1860 Heritage Centre fully Completed.
In commemorating the occasion of indentured workers arriving to South Africa 161 years ago on the 16 November 2021, The 1860 Heritage Centre and the Department of Arts & Culture marked the occasion with a Landing Ceremony and Prayer at the 1860 Commemorative Monument Site.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala, MEC for Arts & Culture Hlengiwe Mavimbela and MEC Ravi Pillay observed an interfaith prayer and then proceed to immerse the simple marigold flower into the Indian Ocean in tribute to a peoples' contribution towards the forging of our nation of South African. The sacred marigold flower is a symbol of simplicity and the hard work that embodies the spirit of the indentured workers.
A bell ringing ceremony was also performed to mark the arrival of indentured workers 161 years ago. Invited guests proceeded to the 1860 Heritage Centre for an Exhibitions Walkabout with MEC Hlengiwe Mavimbela and MEC Ravi Pillay.
MEC Hlengiwe Mavimbela officially opened the Role of Women in the
Freedom Struggle Exhibition and deliver their address to mark the occasion of the 161 st arrival of indentured workers to South Africa.
