Sprout - Software as a Service

Sprout - Software as a Service

Date: 2014-04-05
Software as a Service (SaaS) is a software distribution model in which software applications are hosted by a service provider and made available to customers over a network, (e.g. the Internet).

SaaS is becoming an increasingly popular model as underlying technologies that support Web services mature and new developmental approaches adjust to this new way. Meanwhile, broadband service has become increasingly available and quicker to support user access.

With backups now being automated and moved more and more into a hosted (or cloud) environment, software is just another element of computing that is going the same way. There is even an option to have a scaled down (and cheaper) computer in your home or office and have the functionality previously associated with a PC and laptop hosted in the cloud.

Benefits of the SaaS model would include easier administration, automatic updates/ patch management, all users on the same version of the software, easier collaboration and global accessibility.

The traditional model of software distribution, in which software is purchased for and installed on personal computers, is nowadays sometimes referred to as software as a product as opposed to SaaS.
