20 years of networking

20 years of networking

Date: 2014-09-26
The Umhlanga Women Achievers networking club for women in business is celebrating their 20th anniversary with a High Tea on Friday, 3 October.

The club started with 19 members in 1994 and despite membership fluctuating over the years, the 100th member mark was reached this year under the chairmanship of Alice Leah, owner and editor of Mum's Mail.

The celebratory function is organised by founder member, Heléne Griffiths and five of the club's Past Presidents, including the very first President, Teresa de Beer. They will act as hostesses and have a couple of surprises in store for their guests. Past President, Terri Greeff, has even written a song especially for the occasion.

There is quite a buzz amongst members in anticipation of the celebration as the dress code is 'Re-used/Re-discovered/Re-purposed Ensemble'. The club has had a number of themed meetings over the years - from July Hangover Hats and Medical Attire, to Something Pink for Cancer Awareness month. So dressing up is nothing new. There is even talk of one or two guests who may have 'rediscovered' their wedding dresses.

The UWA is a non-profit organisation and previously the president nominated a charity to which the club made a donation at the end of her year. However, this year's President, Alice Leah, and her committee have done monthly random acts of kindness and thus far have contributed to seven charity wish lists. This includes the purchase of a microwave oven for a baby home and garden benches for a school.
