Star gazing at the Vodacom Durban July Gallops
Mild early morning winter weather contributed to the enthusiastic atmosphere at the new renamed Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse as a big crowd gathered for the annual Vodacom Durban July Gallops.
The nineteen runners left in the final field after the scratching of Magnificent Seven all impressed, thirteen of them running at the Durban course while the balance ran at their Gauteng base, televised for the punters watching on the big screens at the Durban race course.
While all the gallopers showed themselves to be in top condition, the top horses in the betting like favourite Hawwaam, Do It Again and Rainbow Bridge looked outstanding.
It was Rainbow Bridge that set the best time over the final 400m when he stopped the clock in 22.65 secs with the Dynasty filly Lady In Black recording the second best time of 22.93 secs even though she appeared to be moving sedately through her work.
Off the track the big crowd enjoyed the free coffee and chelsea buns on offer, while models parades outfits designed on the theme "Stars of Africa".
With much of the infield Marquee Village construction complete, the atmosphere ahead of the 123rd Vodacom Durban July has increased noticeably, and brisk ticket sales point to another sell-out Vodacom Durban July on Saturday 6 July.
