Through my eyes

Through my eyes

What a week! What exciting prospects! Life just seems like a beautiful rollercoaster ride through some Jurassic theme park.

Really, the only thing to do is to buckle up, take a deep breath, hold on tight and enjoy the ride.

For so many people life has become very difficult and while some are weathering the storms with grace and poise, others somehow are just loosing the proverbial plot.

I was in shock the other day while shopping at WooliesI have been so busy that I had not been able to go to my beloved Verulam market, so I waited until the fridge was empty and then made my way to my local Woolies store.

I was buying just a few items to carry me through until Thursday when I will be able to replenish my supplies, and I was just blown away by the prices. Really blown away!

I will only give you one example; 30gr of chilli is R10.99

1kg chilli at the market is R15

Woollies chilli works out to about R380 per kilo - now what is that about It could be that the chilli comes from Mozambique, but why are they selling Mozambican chilli in our stores What is wrong with our KZN chilli

Somehow, this whole business made me very uneasy. Are we being screwed And if yes, what is the conspiracy

I work too hard for my money to pay R21 for an avocado, when I can get them at R2,50 at the market. What is happening to our price regulators Is there no accountability

Our lives are becoming more and more complex. We are experiencing tough economic hardships and a lot of people are struggling to keep afloat with the measly salaries that we are earning.

We are all working harder for less. We are putting in longer hours and earning just enough to keep going but what about the future What about building some kind of a nest egg for our children and maybe their children

My parents managed to save. They worked hard, saved hard and they succeeded to help my brother and I when we first started out in life.

That really is an impossibility these days. The cost of living has shot through the roof. Even if like me you are cutting the cornersthere is only so much that we can save, because life here in our tiny global village is just too expensive.

But on the other hand, we should be grateful that there is food.

Having grown up on food stamps and food shortages I really should not complain and yet I feel robbed and I just can't help it

With that in mind, I wish you all a fabulous week.
