ACDP celebrates International Literacy Month at Sizani Primary School
In keeping with the above and to mark the celebration of International Literacy Month, members of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) in Kwadukuza visited the Sizani Primary School which is based in Umhlali on Wednesday, the 23rd of September 2015. In an effort to encourage and promote a passion for reading among learners, ACDP members visited the school to hand over English Readers and Charts to the school library for the Foundation Phase learners.
Stephanie Subramanian, an ACDP branch chairperson, addressed the learners and staff on behalf of the ACDP. She thanked the Principal and staff for allowing the ACDP to visit the school in celebration of International Literacy month.
Stephanie said,"The ACDP is passionate about promoting literacy and reading amongst scholars. The future success of our communities and South Africa at large depends on the growth and development of our children within the education system. Reading therefore needs to receive higher priority within our schools in order to produce successful leaders for the future."
Provincial Executive Chair and local councillor, Cllr Nel Sewraj said,"Globally about 75 million children are out of school while many attend irregularly or drop out altogether. In South Africa itself, 13% of Foundation Phase leaners have been found to be illiterate after their first five years of schooling. This means that 13% of Grade 5 learners in South Africa are illiterate. This is unacceptable and has to be addressed. The ACDP wants to raise awareness about this in society and provide solutions in schools. This was the logic behind our donation to Sizani Primary."
Head of Department of Foundation Phase at Sizani Primary, Ms N.E. Lamula said: "We appreciate the donation of the English Readers from the ACDP as this will help our young learners enjoy the stories and increase their knowledge from as young as they are."
