World Read Aloud Day

World Read Aloud Day

Date: 2017-02-24

Nal'ibali (isiXhosa for "here's the story") is a national reading-for-enjoyment campaign to spark children's potential through storytelling and reading.

Now in its third year, the World Read Aloud Day hosted by Nal'ibali nationwide, aims to raise awareness on the importance of reading and sharing stories with children and with 365000 children read aloud to last year, the aim for this year was 500000. KZN DOE Director: ELITS, Mrs. Khanyi Dubazana was just one of the speakers that addressed the guests and in her speech she said, "This project is of utmost importance We need to create a culture of reading".

World Read Aloud Day is supported by USAID, the KZN Department of Education, the Department of Basic Education and uShaka Marine World who welcomed the event to uShaka Kids World for the first time.

With around one hundred children in attendance from schools around KZN, WRAD ambassador, Ms. Buhle Ngaba took to the stage to read the chosen story of the day to the children. Instead of reading in English, she chose to read in another language, that of IsiZulu. Two Children from the audience were also invited to come up to the stage and read a segment from the story, whilst all the children followed along with their own copies of the story in English, which they could take home.
