#1: Andre Martin: "Suiting Up"

Andre Martin, the man behind the iconic label Life, is looking to men to "suit up" and be more adventurous for the upcoming Vodacom Durban July.

"Men's fashion is fast becoming a force both locally and internationally and we must not be afraid to step out of comfort zones. It is an exciting time for menswear!" said Martin.

Martin is part of the lineup for the 2014 Vodacom Durban July Invited Designer Showcase presented by LIPSY. Hailed as one of South Africa's most successful menswear designers he has created a unique brand that is synonymous with street chic.

"Men should try and be more creative by stepping out differently to the traditional way they have been dressing for years," explained the KwaZulu-Natal designer. "This year's theme "The Big Screen" allows men the opportunity to be more creative when putting their outfits together."

The dashing designer urged men to consider mixing up sportswear and formalwear for their race day attire. "You should not limit your options by only considering a tailored suit. This is a huge trend and if executed correctly can be really interesting and appealing."

"Try wear vintage track pants with a tailored shirt and blazer or tailored stove-pipe pants with a sports jacket," explained Martin. "Or if you are deciding to wear a tailored suit, the stove-pipe pants cut just above the ankle is the look."

Other handy hints included being mindful of the cut and fit of the suit. "Men sometimes wear oversized suits which they then become lost in."

Also remember to carefully consider fabric choice. "As a day event you don't want to feel hot and uncomfortable, especially if you spend time walking around and watching the fashion."

The self- taught designer, famed for his love for denim, gained valuable manufacturing experience whilst working for a clothing company. Over the years Martin has developed a signature and versatile style born from the streets.

But above all the Invited Designer recommends enjoying the Vodacom Durban July experience in an outfit that you love. "The Vodacom Durban July is an opportunity to really get out there and look like the movie star you are. Find a look that you are comfortable with and just go for it!" The 2014 Vodacom Durban July will be staged atGreyville racecourse on Saturday 5 July 2014. More information can be found at https://www.vodacomdurbanjuly.co.za.
