Helping Neighbours Light Up
Helping Neighbours Light Up
Locally based LUAH - Light Up A Home is a charity which provides solar based lighting to households in disadvantaged rural communities throughout Africa out of the range of the ESKOM grid. The charity has already equipped hundreds of needy households.
However founder Jackie Williams and fellow members Managay Pillay, Belinda MacKintosh and Londi Khumalo mindful that many local urban communities are equally underprivileged are driving a programme to uplift them by making lighting facilities available. Studies have proven that where school children have access to lighting during hours of darkness their grades improve by more than 25%. An added advantage is the reduced risk of shack fires, which result from the use of Kerosene and candles.
The units, which are currently issued are designed and manufactured in Shaka's Head and ruggedly made specifically for the African market.
LUAH raises funds direct from industry and public. Every R4,000 donated allows the charity to identify areas of need, mentor and instal a unit which provides a facility which many of us take for granted
LUAH has set itself the 2020 targets of providing solar based electricity to a further 100 households and are planning to work with local businesses wishing to fulfill their Corporate Social Responsibility ambitions.
