Royal Reed Dance a Success

Royal Reed Dance a Success

Date: 2016-09-16
The Department of Arts and Culture assisted by various municipalities and provincial government held a successful Royal Reed Dance in Nongoma this past weekend. The ceremony was attended by thousands of maidens and royal guests from South Africa and the African continent.

The department and provincial government as a whole use cultural events such as this one as a vehicle to educate young people on moral regeneration.Various initiatives such as the provision of bursary applications forms during the event to help enrich the scope ofuMkhosiWomhlangaare added to the programme every year.

Furthermore, there is growing interest in the number of organisations that want to participate in our annual career exhibition at the Reed Dance. We also witnessed an increase in small businesses trading in and around the Enyokeni Palace over the weekend. It is also worth noting that the budget to manage this event has seen a gradual increase to ensure that all logistical items are catered for. As with previous years the main cost drivers include the hiring of 31 marquees, 24 of which are used as sleeping areas for the maidens. Catering for approximately 35 000 girls, the hiring of over 220 buses and 35 taxis, additional security personnel as well as the provision of water also fall under the same budget.

Early reports from the police and our joint security operation indicate that the event went ahead without major glitches, with the exception of three buses that were impounded by the road traffic inspectorate.

The benefits of hostinguMkhosiWomhlangaare major for business, society and the province as a whole. Every necessary aspect is put in place to ensure that the maidens are safe throughout the event.

"We would like to thank all the people of KwaZulu-Natal, we commend our colleagues in the Transport Department for the role they played during the busy period, working to arrest those breaking the law and impounding unroadworthy cars. Hosting this event is a complex logistical project which takes a great deal of planning and due process.

The improving coordination on the part of the department is also commendable, we are satisfied with the reports we have been given and are pleased that all maidens returned home safely," said provincial Arts and Culture Sithole-Moloi For more information please contact: Lethukuthula Mtshali 081 037 8321.
