I'll be honest with you. I wasn't expecting to be this impressed.
The Suzuki Across rolled into my week quietly, the way genuinely confident things tend to do. No fanfare, no theatre. Just those narrow LED projector headlamps, a set of dual-tone machined alloys on the GLX I was driving, and that seamless 19-segment taillight cluster stretching bank to bank across the rear. It looks premium without screaming about it.
Inside is where the Across makes its real argument. The stitched upholstery, the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, the 10.1-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the ventilated front seats, the panoramic sunroof flooding the cabin with KZN sunshine. Every feature you'd find on vehicles costing considerably more, sitting right there, matter-of-factly, like it's no big deal. It kind of is, though.
The 1.5-litre mild-hybrid K15C petrol is smooth, frugal, and paired to a 6-speed automatic that changes its mind before you've finished thinking about it. Fuel economy that'll have you quietly smug at the pumps.
But here's what genuinely got my attention. Out on the open highway, at speed, the Across felt planted, composed, and utterly unruffled. The suspension soaked up the kilometres with that trademark Suzuki smoothness, and high-speed stability was frankly better than the price tag has any right to promise. I've driven vehicles twice the price that fidget more on the open road.
Six airbags, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist. Five-year/200,000km warranty. Four-year/60,000km service plan. Pricing from R349,900.
