Candlelight vigil for Zimbabwe

Candlelight vigil for Zimbabwe

Date: 2019-02-01
About 60 people - Durban locals, Zimbabweans and nationals from other African countries - braved the cool blustery weather to show their concern, empathy, condolences and solidarity for their brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe at a candlelight vigil held at dusk in Jameson Park on Monday evening, 28 January. The overwhelming theme was a plea for human rights, peace and calm. Zimbabwean nationals shared their life experiences and anecdotes of the horrific situation in Zimbabwe currently. A Malawian national shared his story and came to show his support and solidarity with his African neighbours, and South Africans reached out with symbolic support and empathy. "If one of us is not free, none of us in Africa are free" said Cllr Martin Meyer. The vigil was hosted by concerned individuals affiliated to Save Our Berea, in support of the local branch of the Zimbabwe Solidarity Movement who will have other symbolic actions planned over the next while
