Good Friday Service
Good Friday Service
The well-established tradition of the ecumenical Good Friday service has become not only the flagship of Diakonia but also a major event in the calendar of the city, attended by thousands of people.
Each year, the service highlights a particular aspect of national suffering and injustice. The 28th service this year will focus on Born Free? and we will be reflecting on issues that keep us in bondage in this country, yet we are born free.
A time of meditative singing will start at 5.15am at the Durban Exhibition Centre (DEC) and the service will start at 6.15am. The preacher will be Professor Sarojini Nadar of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
After the service, the congregation will proceed in meditative silence to the City Hall. The final ceremony will be concluded at about 8.15am with the traditional flowering of the cross, where we will lift up the flowered cross as a sign of our hope that Christ will break the chains that bind us, preventing us from living our lives to the fullest.
Limited parking and street parking will be available at the DEC with additional off street parking around the City Hall. Transport back to the DEC from the City Hall will be available for the elderly and the infirm. Entry to the Good Friday is free, with a collection being taken up during the service to support the burgeoning costs of the event. All are welcome to participate in this significant, multi-lingual Easter service.
