Adventures with Kingsley

Adventures with Kingsley

Author: Kingsley Holgate
Date: 2017-01-20
A new year and we've hit the ground running-destination: the annual voodoo festival in Benin.Howexciting when yet another expedition plan comes together, when scribbles on a map and shared ideas become reality. Having spent much of a lifetime adventuring in every country in Africa, including her island states, we are keenly aware of the rapidly changing face of 'Mama Africa'. So whilst Africa still remains one of the last great frontiers of adventure, this expedition is part of a series of once-off Land Rover journeys calledAfrica's Living Traditions.' to document and participate in Africa's richly colourful traditional cultural practices, many of which are fast disappearing.

Herewith the latest expedition news taken from the sweat-stained scribbles in Kingsley's journal

BUSHNOTE #1: Slaves, Castles, Voodoo and the Gates of No Return

Mima Ache! Greetings from West Africa's Gulf of Guinea where today the humidity is as thick as golden syrup and the sun struggles to shine through the Harmattan dust haze that blows in from the distant Sahara But there's a great atmosphere, music blares and there's a colorful New Years fancy dress carnival buzz in the streets as we begin the year with another Land Rover Living Traditions Journey of Discovery that this time is taking us from Accra Ghana, along the old Gold Coast dotted with ancient European built slave trading castles, to the most southerly tip of three cape points and then inland to the Ashanti capital of Kumasi, then north towards Burkina Faso, down the Volta, across Togo and on to Benin to document the annual Voodoo Ceremony near the 'Gates of No Return'.

Coupled to ongoing Malaria and Rite to Sight work it all promises to be another great odyssey and an excitingstart to 2017. As always we'll keep you posted with pics and scribbled Bush Notes from afar. Life's a great adventure.
