Driving The Golf 8

After spending a week behind the wheel of the new Golf 8, I can confidently say that Volkswagen have delivered their eighth solid rendition of the iconic hatchback. I remember the first one fondly with the gearstick fashioned to look like a golf ball. The exterior revamp is subtle but effective - the LED headlights and clean body lines give the new Golf a more contemporary presence without losing that unmistakable Golf DNA.
Inside, the cabin presents genuinely premium materials. The digital cockpit is crisp and responsive, though I'll admit the touch-sensitive controls took some getting used to. The build quality remains excellent, with soft-touch materials where they matter most. Rear passengers get adequate space, though taller adults might find headroom slightly compromised.
On the road, the 1.4-liter TSI engine strikes an impressive balance between performance and efficiency. The 110 kilowatt 250Nm engine pulls cleanly from low revs and the 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox feels adequately punchy for daily driving, returning a reported 6.3 litres per hundred.
The chassis tuning is typically Germanic - composed and predictable with enough feedback to keep enthusiastic drivers engaged. Road noise is well-controlled at highway speeds, making longer journeys comfortable. The ride quality is on the firmer side but never feels harsh, more solid and reliable as expected from the brand.
The new Golf 8 doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it refines an already proven formula. For buyers seeking a premium compact hatchback that balances practicality with driving enjoyment, it remains a compelling choice in the passenger car market.
