The Fish Are Dying

The Fish Are Dying

A grim discovery on the North Coast has forced the KwaDukuza Municipality to shut down the uMhlali River mouth at Tinley Manor Beach and the Shaka's Cove Tidal Pool. Thousands of fish, ranging from juvenile kingfish to crabs and shrimp, were found dead or gasping for air by residents following a recent thunderstorm. While some locals reported a brownish tint and a chemical smell in the water, authorities are still working to pin down the exact cause.

The municipality has warned everyone to stay out of the water and, most importantly, not to collect or eat any of the dead fish while they wait for laboratory results to confirm if this was caused by industrial spillages, sewage, or natural factors like low oxygen levels.

This environmental crisis has sparked different reactions across the community. Environmental activists and local conservancy groups are heartbroken, calling the area a vital nursery for marine life that has now been devastated. On the other hand, officials are asking for patience as they conduct water quality assessments to ensure public safety before reopening the popular swimming spots.

It is a frustrating situation for residents who have seen similar pollution issues in nearby rivers recently, raising bigger questions about how our water systems are being managed. The beaches remain open and the fish death has been accredited to the long heat wave and oxygen deficiency.
