Conversations We Do Not Have: Acquiescence

Conversations We Do Not Have: Acquiescence

Date: 2013-08-09
The newly-invigorated Durban Art Gallery, in the Durban City Hall, is opening Conversations We Do Not Have: Acquiescence - a collaborative exhibition to acknowledge Women's month - which opens on 9 August and uses as a starting point the beautiful narrative artwork panels currently being archived at the Phansi Museum which will form the core focus of the Amazwi Voices of Women Museum.

The exhibition is curated by Coral Bijoux from the museum, with curatorial support by DAG's Jenny Stretton and Thulani Makhaye, educational support by Witty Nyide and administrative support by Shamilla Pather.

"We are delighted that our second exhibition since the completion of the repairs to the gallery roof is such a strong, topical and relevant exhibition which both talks to such important social issues and allows us to showcase many of our pieces from our permanent collection," says Mduduzi Xakaza, Director: Durban Art Gallery.

For the opening, on 9 August, guests will gather on the steps of the Durban Art Gallery at 6pm to light candles and to hold a silent vigil for five minutes, as a public show of solidarity with the abused, marginalised and voiceless women across the world.

Families are invited to light candles and observe five minutes of silence from 6pm wherever they are - in homes, offices, community venues, places of worship and public spaces on Women's Day, August 9.

A strong educational component will accompany the exhibition - comprising workshops and walkabouts. For the full educational programme, contact Witty Nyide on 031 3112274 for enquiries/ bookings. For more information, contact Shamilla on 071 270 1183 / shampather@yahoo.com.

The Durban Art Gallery (DAG) is open seven days a week: Monday until Saturday from 8.30am until 4pm, and Sunday from 11am until 4pm. Entry is free and all are welcome! For more info, contact the Gallery on 031 311 2264 / 9 or Jabu.Mngwengwe@durban.gov.za (weekdays).
