The new SL 400 AMG Line: Start-up with new vigour

Rudolf Uhlenhaut developed the first 300SL 60 years ago which has today evolved into the Mercedes-Benz SL400 AMG which is the pedigree of its older brother the SL500. As manufacturers have found success in downsizing engines, so too the new 3.0-litre V6 engine in this SL400 replaces the 3.5-litre powerplant. The reduced displacement and forced-induction route is subsequently smaller and lighter but producers more power.

The new SL400 has serious pulling power now with two turbochargers and a direct injection producing 480 Nm of torque and a power output of 245 kW powered to the rear wheels which will get you from 0-100km/h in just 5.2 sec, 0.7 sec faster than its predecessor. It is fitted with a conventional seven speed automatic gear box and is manufactured virtually just from lightweight aluminium resulting in a consumption of 7.3 l/100km.

The roadster was redesigned in 2012 and the new SL400 hasn't received any cosmetic changes apart from the badge replacement although the car still remains aesthetically pleasing without looking outdated or tired. A unique gadget has been fitted called magic sky control; the power-folding hard top comes with panoramic glass which gives you the feel of an open environment enclosed within the car, this gadget allows you switch the glass between transparent and opaque at the touch of a button.

The SL 400 AMG Line is introduced at R1212600 basic and additional packages are available but the car is sufficiently kitted out as it is. Although we aren't comparing apples with apples, it is in tough competition with Jaguars F-Type which is under R1000000.
