Basic guide to isiZulu By Maashi Rampersad

Date: 2022-06-28

Maashi Rampersad is not new to fame; after all she was crowned Miss India South Africa and spent many years as an educator in KZN. Recently she has taken to sharing her knowledge with the masses by launching her book; 'Your Basic isiZulu guide to the kingdom of the Zulus', the launch was held on 11 June in uMhlanga.

There was drumming, Zulu dancing and beautiful singing of the national anthem. Sorisha Naidoo was the MC our guest of Honour was Ishwar Ramlutchman (Prince Mabheka Zulu). Some of the Guest speakers included Mr Narend Singh (chief whip of the IFP in the National Assembly) Mr Vivian Reddy (Businessman and CEO of Edison Group) Mr Logie Naido (board member of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife). The Bugle spoke to Maashi, she said, "I feel a profound sense of joy and honour to have written my first isiZulu book. My vision for this book is that it should be a 'survival guide' and a clear lens through which our fe llow South Africans, and our global family of

brothers and sisters visiting our beautiful country. They would be able to learn the basics of isiZulu and communicate efficiently and confidently in this language adored and spoken on the daily basis by many millions in South Africa."

Maashi continued saying, "My passion for learning this widely spoken language began 20 years ago when I embarked on my undergraduate studies at University. My yearning to learn and my immense love for isiZulu inspired me to choose isiZulu as one of my major subjects. Subsequently, I completed my honours degree and studies towards my master degree in isiZulu. This soulful isiZulu journey of mine has enabled me to mentor a vast array of students from primary and secondary schools, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students at university. Furthermore, I have experienced the joy of mentoring and tutoring adults through corporate isiZulu training initiatives. I have also been involved in moderating and editing isiZulu literature for educational purposes."

"During my Miss India South Africa reign I was truly blessed to meet the leading light of our country, Nelson Mandela, who encouraged me to assist in making our nation more literate in isiZulu." And here she has done it, lived up to the legacy she promised Madiba over two decades ago.

It was a memorable launch enjoyed by all feeling the spirit of'Ubuntu'

Maashi is currently working with the Tourism Board and Department of Education for this book to reach as many people in KZN, South Africa and foreigners.
