An intriguing mix of sculpture and painting coming to Ballito.

An intriguing mix of sculpture and painting coming to Ballito.

Date: 2014-08-01
Isabel Roos, curator and owner of Imbizo gallery in Ballito, has gathered together five specific artists for an absorbing joint exhibition this August.

A rather fresh take on this shared exhibition is that Isabel has concentrated on inviting predominantly sculptors, as opposed to painters, for a showing of some vastly different styles and skills 'in the round'.

Terri Broll, who has a Master's degree in Fine Art and a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology, will anchor the exhibition's wall space with her extraordinarily strong paintings which she chooses to describe as a kind of 'fascination horror'. She works in oil and wax, the wax giving the work a texture that suggests images that are both disturbing and humorous.

The theme and title of the exhibition is "No Tomorrow", which according to sculptor Marke Meyer, was chosen as he and his fellow artists and colleagues live and create in this way. "To create, an artist needs to immerse himself in the present. One loses track of time," he explains, "hours my pass without the artist being aware of it. When I get into this incredible space, it's as if there is 'No Tomorrow'. One lives in the moment with a reckless abandon."

Izidro Duarte agrees and adds that, "creating as if there was 'No Tomorrow' urges him not to let the fear of future consequences deter him from pursuing the work which gains a life of its own in the present moment. It's liberating," he says, with a twinkle in his eye.

The remaining two Sculptors, Michael Canadas and Leoni Needham, are known throughout South Africa and abroad as the co-founders of The Loop Art Foundry. They have been responsible for casting a great deal of state commissioned sculpture in-between casting the work of more than 400 individual sculptors' work too. Nowadays, Michael heads the foundry on his own, but both remain sculptors of considerable stature.

In summary, artists that will be exhibiting include Marke Meyer, Izidro Duarte, Michael Canadas, Leoni Needham and the 'painter amongst the thorns', Terri Broll.

The exhibition will be opened by the effervescent actress and presenter Barbie Meyer. This will take place at Imbizo Gallery in the Ballito Life Style Centre on Thursday the 14th August at 6.30p.m. Everyone is welcome to come along to the exhibition, enjoy a glass of wine and chat to the artists who will be in attendance.

The exhibition will then be open daily until 30th September 2014.
