Free Dance Workshops at JOMBA!

Free Dance Workshops at JOMBA!

Date: 2012-08-29
With principal funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, the Centre for Creative Arts (University of KwaZulu-Natal) presents the 14th edition of its celebrated annual contemporary dance platform, the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience between 29 August and 9 September. JOMBA's status as one of the few remaining dedicated spaces in South Africa where dance and choreography remain nurtured and supported includes a range of highly-valued dance education and development programmes.

On Saturday, 1 September from 9am - 11am, Durban's Musa Hlatshwayo conducts a workshop which takes the form of a technique class, with the focus on building strength and fitness for the contemporary dancer. Then on Sunday, 2 September, Vincent Mantsoe, who first emerged under choreographer Sylvia Glasser and then established ground-breaking originality that continues to inspire South African dancers today, leads a workshop which also takes the form of a techniques class, exploring some of the contemporary dance training that exemplifies his working style and method. This takes place from 10am - 12noon.

Exploring the technique and dance training styles which inform his work with the Gauteng-based company, The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative, is PJ Sabbagha's workshop on Friday, 7 September from 2pm - 4pm. Closing this year's workshop programme, is the workshop with Philippe Pelen Baldini and Thierry Moucazambo from Reunion Island's professional dance and theatre company, Theatre Taliipot. In this session which takes place from 2pm - 4pm, the Reunion Island duo engage exploratory movement and dance that allows the audience an insight into Theatre Taliipot's unique style of creating dance theatre.

All workshops will be held in the Dance Studio on the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Drama and Performance Studies Department (Howard College Campus).

The workshops are offered free of charge to participants, but booking is essential as spaces are limited. The workshops are only open to dancers 16 years and older.

Call 031 260 2506 to book a place in one or all of the workshops. (Booking is essential.)
