What is SEO?

What is SEO?

So if you've recently rebuilt your company's website or done any research on marketing, you would probably have come across the term SEO. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and usually refers to the process of getting your website to show higher up on the search engine rankings. In South Africa, this usually means Google.

So why would I want to rank higher?

Getting closer to the first position on any search engine means that you are going to get more traffic to your website. Popular blog searchenginewatch.com estimates that position 1 on Google gets as much as 33% of all traffic for a search term. As human beings we are inherently lazy and want to get the information we are looking for as fast as possible. As search engines have gotten better and better at delivering us the right results, we have stopped looking past the first page, with over 96% of searches only looking at the first page of results. What that means is that if your website shows up on page 2 for "plumbers in Durban", you are not going to get much traffic, and even less enquiries.
