It was so good to take a long break from it all and just not have to think about my next issuemy next sales call or my next assignment. As much as I love what I do, it is crucial to have a healthy break from the entire daily grind. Believe me.
Business owners are often celebrated for wearing multiple hats and logging numerous hours into their businesses. But working without let-up is a bad habit that can jeopardize business, health and the life you're supposedly working toward.
It's easy to fall into the trap of overdoing it, and in this slowed economic climate few ambitious achievers understand one of the biggest secrets of productivity - the refuelling principle.
Basically it comes down to this: you get more done quicker when you step back and recharge the brain and body. Studies show that performance increases after breaks of all durations: from extended vacations down to micro breaks of 30 seconds.
So we took a few weeks off and headed for the island of Sri Lanka. We knew very little about the tear drop country hanging off the Southern tip of India, but we were not interested in demographics or the GDP's, we just needed time out in a far away place, the more remote the better.
Sri Lanka was the best elixir for my burnout ever. The people were kind and sympathetic, the cost of living cheap and resplendent and the scenery just too incredible to put into words.
Being away from the TV and the phone was the best thing for me. There was just no unnecessary interruptions invading my time out
Breaks are important for every conceivable reason. If you fail to take breaks, you'll erode productivity, turn out poor work, dampen creativity, diminish enjoyment, act like a monster, and eventually burn out. Not taking a break is one of the worst things you can do to yourself.
No matter how much you love your work, we cannot keep creating when we are on empty.It is difficult to see things from a new perspective or find new insights when we come at it the same way all the time.
The next time you feel guilty about taking a break, consider how much more effective it may make you in the long run. So the basic message is that we have to be recharged, or we run out of juice.
