"After assessing the needs of LIV Farm and engaging with the community, we opted to assist by constructing a vegetable tunnel to grow spinach plants. The materials were donated by Angel Projects and another NPO project called AMCUP, operating at Karridene.
Once harvested, the spinach will provide essential nutrition for the 56 underprivileged children who live at the farm," said Meg Enerson, Marketing & Business Development at BDO Durban.
The 9m long tunnel took three hours to erect. Whilst it was being constructed, additional volunteers fertilised and watered over 2 000 spinach plants which were later planted in the tunnel.
"This was extremely hard work, with many sore backs as a result, but the overall feeling from the volunteers was one of fulfillment and satisfaction in knowing that their efforts would benefit so many children in need."
Mark Emerson, head of marketing at LIV Village, expressed his thanks to the BDO team for their donation and involvement, "LIV Village's goal is to increase the number of children living on the farm and so the need for food is always increasing."
"We also aim to plant one fruit tree for each child to ensure a constant and sustainable source of nutrition. In support of this aim, BDO Durban donated fourteen fruit trees to add to our current orchard."
Local women who are subsidised by the government also assist at the farm and people have been trained to tend to the gardens to ensure the longevity of the project.
