Let's reach out to those who are Deaf on Talk Sign Day

Let's reach out to those who are Deaf on Talk Sign Day

Date: 2016-02-19
Imagine how lonely it must be when you don't understand what the people around you are saying and, no-one understands what you are trying to say? This is how people who are Deaf feel around those who don't understand South African Sign Language (SASL).

The mission of the Talk Sign campaign, a KZN Blind & Deaf Society initiative, is to make all hearing South Africans aware of, and sensitive to, the needs of people who are Deaf and hard of hearing. The aim is to promote two way communication between Deaf and hearing people and, in time, fully integrate the Deaf community into schools, social and competitive sports, in the workplace and in all aspects of life.

The Society urges hearing South Africans to reach out to those who are Deaf this Talk Sign Day by doing the following:

  1. Buy a Talk Sign sticker for only R10. All proceeds raised from the sale of stickers will be used to help educate and find employment for people who are Deaf.
  2. Wear your sticker on Talk Sign Day, Friday 11 March, and show support for South African's who are Deaf and hard of hearing.
  3. Learn the 2016 'Let's Connect' Talk Sign phrases in South African Sign Language (SASL). These phrases can be found on the Talk Sign website - https://www.talksign.co.za.
  4. Share your experience of SASL by taking a photo of yourself, or you and friends, doing the 'Let's Connect' signs and then load it onto Instagram along with #talksignday.

To buy your sticker, please contact Ellisha on 309 4991 or email ellisha@talksign.co.za. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
