uBhejaneX 2017

uBhejaneX 2017

Date: 2017-12-08

Sheffield Beach - Local cyclist Jasper van Vessem, from Cycloholic, is one of the 35 cyclists that will start pedaling on their mountain bike in Hillcrest on 9 December at 02:00 hours and only to stop pedaling 16 hours and 340 kilometers later at Hill Top Camp, Hluhluwe. The ride is called the uBhejaneX and in the height of KwaZulu-Natal's summer and with a 16 hour cut-off time it is arguably the toughest one-day MTB ride in South Africa!.

It is not a race but ride to draw attention and raise money for various programs such as maintaining the aerial support of the Zululand Anti-Poaching Wing (ZAP-Wing) to 26 game reserves in northern KZN, providing urgently needed anti-poaching training and other resources to field rangers and game reserves, and community-based education and awareness initiatives targeting primarily youth.

Having started in 2014, Saturday 09 December 2017 signals the fourth edition of the social yet gruelling event whereby the participants will be joined and supported by world renowned cycling, environmental and humanitarian personalities such as Phil Liggett, Sibusiso Vilane, Kingsley Holgate, Vanessa Sandes and Chris Froome.

The uBhejaneX is a self-funded ride that does not have an entry but does require the participants to cover their own expenses and raise a minimum of R 5000 to be donated to rhino conservation. If you want to donate you can find the details at http://ubhejanex.org/donate/ or if you want to support the riders on the route, they will be rolling through Ballito around 04:00 hours on Saturday 9 December 2017.
