World Autism Day

World Autism Day

Date: 2014-03-28
April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. To commemorate this, Action in Autism in Durban is holding an awareness campaign to highlight the condition of autism and the desperate lack of facilities and resource for people with autism.

On Saturday 5th of April between 9am and 11am, the organisation will be advocating and raising awareness at various shopping centres in and around Durban, including Warwick Junction, Pine Crest Centre and the Workshop. Pamphlets in isiZulu and English and stickers raising awareness about the condition of autism will be distributed, and t-shirts will be on sale.

From 2pm to 4pm stakeholders in autism will gather for a meet, greet and share at the APN Portuguese Club, 5 Wright Place, Carrington Heights. Parents, people with autism, educators, principals, department of education officials, therapists, doctors and all others involved in autism will have a chance to put their heads together to discuss how to best serve people with autism in an attitude of sharing and respect.

People with Autism Spectrum Disorders and neurological difference have experienced years of neglect, stigmatisation and institutional discrimination. In terms of delivery of early childhood development services, hundreds of thousands of children with disabilities, especially those with Autism Spectrum disorders, are restricted to the role of mere spectators.

Action in Autism worked in partnership with the Department of Education (KZN) to establish the Autism Action Plan, and continues to give voice to the thousands of people with Autism in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Action in Autism urges all parents, communities, public servants, politicians and lawmakers to work together to ensure that children with Autism have the same opportunities as all children.

Join us at these exciting events and contribute towards building an autism-friendly province. If you would like to find out more about Action in Autism, the awareness campaign or take part in the afternoon stake-holder's discussion, please call Kirsten Miller on 031 207 4858 or email info@actioninautism.org.za.
