New PEUGEOT 2008 Athletic, Agile and Efficient

New PEUGEOT 2008 Athletic, Agile and Efficient

Date: 2014-06-13
Compact crossovers tend to prioritise versatility and practicality, ahead of aspects such as performance and dynamic appeal. But in the case of the 2008, the importance of the fun factor has not gone unnoticed, and the result is vehicle that engages on all fronts.

It all starts under the bonnet, and as the nomenclature implies, the 2008 is powered by a 1,6-litre VVT petrol engine featuring variable valve timing, and 16 valves per cylinder. The all-aluminium engine is a willing, smooth-revving performer that suits the responsive character of the 2008 to a tee.

Maximum output is rated at 88 kW, achieved at 6 000 r/min. The accompanying torque peak of 160 Nm is reached at 4 250 r/min, but a fairly flat torque curve ensures that a significant portion of the urge is already available from well down the rev range.

Straightline performance is brisk, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 9,5 seconds, and a 196 km/h top speed. The standing-start 1 000 m sprint is completed in 30,8 sec. The 2008's in-gear tractability is equally sprightly, accelerating from 80 to 120 km/h in fourth gear in just 9,6 sec.

The 2008's efficiency is best demonstrated by its frugal appetite for fuel. Combined-cycle fuel consumption comes to just 5,9 l/100 km, dropping to as low as 4,8 l/100 km at constant open-road speeds, while average urban consumption comes to 7,7 l/ 100 km. The CO2 emissions rating is 135 g/km.

The Peugeot 2008's engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, which is currently the only transmission option. Drive is to the front wheels, but the 2008 does offer Peugeot's Grip Control system, which adapts the traction control and ESP systems for optimum grip when the going gets tough.

All you need to do now is get down to Peugeot Umhlanga and take the new 2008 out for a test drive. Call them on 031 579 5000 or visit their showroom at 95 Ridge Road, Umhlanga Rocks.
