1.3KM black-top in honor of Chief Luthuli

1.3KM black-top in honor of Chief Luthuli

Date: 2014-03-14
KWADUKUZA Mayor, Ricardo Mthembu welcomes the naming of Chief Luthuli bus route in Groutville.

KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) is honoring the late political activist, Chief Albert Luthuli with yet another black-top road, named after him in KwaDukuza.

Mthembu on Wednesday, made walk-abouts in Groutville; inspecting the two lane stretch that will be surfaced with tar to cover a distance of approximately 1.3km long and 5.8 metres wide.

He was accompanied by a high level team of experts from the construction industry, officials and Executive Council members from KDM.

The route will be fully surfaced with black-top slabs to the value of R 4.1 million (R 4, 110,561.84). The project is billed for completion in five months.

Mayor Mthembu says this is done in honor of the late activist who organized non-violent campaigns to defy discriminatory laws in South Africa, during apartheid. He said it is imperative and mostly correct that it be named after Luthuli.

'Based on the record that Luthuli set in African politics as a leader of a revolutionary movement that fought against the odds of oppression, it is imperative and correct that this road be reconstructed, in honor of this legend. It befits his legacy as the proponent of the struggle, noting the fact that Groutville is also his ancestral home, he left an indelible mark in the history of the country,' said Mthembu.

INkosi Luthuli was the first African to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960 for his role in non-violent struggle against apartheid. He was a South African teacher, politician and a tribal chief, born in 1898 and died on 21 July 1967. He joined mainstream politics in 1944.

His bronze statue was erected in the heart of KwaDukuza town, with a road named after him cutting across the Central Business District. It provides the main entry into the town.
Luthuli's family home, in Groutville was turned into a heritage site, now called the Luthuli Museum.

There is another community development centre, the Chief Albert Luthuli Centre, which was also named after him. It is also where the Umfolozi FET College, Chief Albert Luthuli Campus is situated.

KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu made walk-abouts in Groutville; accompanied by a high level team of experts from the construction industry, officials and Executive Council members from KwaDukuza, inspecting the two lane stretch that will be tarred to cover a distance of approximately 1.3KM long and 5.8 metres wide.
