KPMG Business Relay
Giving business the chance to enjoy a healthy afternoon of team building and comraderie, the event is part of a wider focus on fitness and health by naming rights sponsors, KPMG.
"Being fit for business means a lot more than purely aiming for a healthy bottom line", comments Farouk Karreem, managing director of KPMG's KZN operation. 'A physically healthy work force is proving to be a critical success factor at all levels of an organization", he adds.
The 2015 KPMG Business Relay marks the start of a 3 to 5 year plan to build the entity in terms of corporate social investment and participation by a wider sector of the Durban community including high schools, development running teams and corporate running clubs. The latter category fits into KPMG's wider focus on fitness through #KPMGFit4Business.
This initiative is about the promotion of health, fitness and motivation among KPMG staff as well as talented South African athletes, many of whom are in need of additional support and mentorship.
KPMG's fully fledged running club will be represented at the 2015 KPMG Business Relay next month and will include some of the top athletes that receive elite sponsorships as part of #KPMGFit4Business. The sponsors will also be bringing down five young athletes in support of the Athletics Academy at Vorentoe High School in Johannesburg. This is part of KPMG's extensive and broad funding of the academy which has grown to 30 athletes - mostly from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds - since it's inception in 2000. The academy has produced some of the country's top athletes including 2013 winner of the SA Sports Woman of the year award, and as many as 18 athletes for the Gauteng schools team over the past two years.
High schools will compete in their own race alongside the main business relay event, which remains a calendar event for companies across KZN and as far afield as Johannesburg. Media sponsors, The Mercury, have entered a team in every event since it's inception. They are one of four other co-sponsors including non-profit organization, MRP Foundation, beverage sponsors, Cooee and venue sponsors, The Sharks.
The challenge is out to all business to enter the easy 5km run or walk and there is also a Wheelchair category open to teams of 3. Entries for the event are open right up until registration day on Friday 13th November and further sites have been added to the festive tent town where many companies enjoy year-end functions.
