New Renault Mégane, class leader in technology

New Renault Mégane, class leader in technology

The Renault Mégane has always been held in high regard as a hot hatch for enthusiasts, and this year Renault has upgraded the Mégane with technological advancements coupled with Renault's distinctive design, and we've all become fond of from the Clio. The 2014 Mégane has been launched in a 5-door hatch and 3 door coupe with three ranges namely, the Mégane GT Turbo 162kw, GT-Line turbo 97kw and the base Dynamique 81kw.

I had the privilege of testing the GT-Line turbo through the winding roads of Randburg. I marvelled at the performance from the début turbocharged engine, it is the most globally advanced 1.2L engine in the industry that delivers an exceptional output of 97kw. It has as much torque as Subaru's 2.0L BRZ producing 205Nm and 90% is available from as little as 1500rpm! The priority of this downsized engine is to maximize fuel efficiency, and I managed to meet the claim of 5.4l / 100km. The GT-Line comes with an Overboost function which is triggered when your foot is flat on the accelerator in 2nd and 3rd gear and the engine responds with and additional 20Nm of torque.

The GT-Line proved to be comfortable and stable while cornering and the drive was a pleasure thanks to the Mégane having the most comprehensive list of standard specification including live navigation and hands-free locking / unlocking keyless entry and futuristic day-time lights. All three derivates include an industry leading 150000km warranty complemented by a standard five-year / 90 000km service plan.

At the launch I participated in Renaults Gymkhana activities where I got a chance to push the GT Turbo 162Kw Mégane to its limits. The suspension is slightly harder and combined with the Mégane RS chassis was noticeably forgiving when cornering at high speeds as well as the engine being extremely responsive with 340Nm of torque from 2400rpm.
