I recently had the delight of putting the new Volkswagen T-Cross R-Line 1.0 TSI through some rigorous testing, and I was impressed by this pint-sized crossover's big aspirations. The T-Cross is Volkswagen's smallest SUV, however its character is large. As small as it is it has a spacious interior, the suspension setup provides very agile handling, and a list of impressive tech features are.
The 1.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine is a gem, producing 85kW of power and a whopping 200Nm of torque. Paired with the highly accomplished 7-speed DSG gearbox, the T-Cross is capable of delivering rapid acceleration and effortless cruising on the highway with only 5.6 litres per hundred in a combined cycle. The R-Line trim adds a sporty edge, with unique styling cues, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a more aggressive suspension setup. The test unit I drove came with a removeable and lockable trailer hitch and was equipped with VW's IQ Drive Package, which includes Travel Assist made up of Lane Keeping assistance system, Forward Collision Warning Front Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control and Pedestrian monitoring.
On the road, the T-Cross is a breeze to drive, zero to a hundred in 10.2 seconds, with light and precise steering, a comfortable ride. There's sophistication with the Navigation system, Wireless App Connect and Voice Control, even Digital Cockpit Pro with a 10 inch screen. The cabin is remarkably quiet, and the premium materials and modern design add to the luxury feeling.
The T-Cross's biggest strength, however, is its practicality. With a generous 430-liter boot, and rear seats that fold flat to create a massive 1,281-liter cargo area. The T-Cross comes standard with a 3 year / 120000km warranty and a 3 year / 45000km service plan. Make one yours.
