I guess the best news is that my boys will be home soon for their holidays and the house will be filled with their jovial chatter, boisterous banter and dirty dishes. Who would have thought that I would actually miss all of that a year ago?
And while world peace is treading conspicuously on a fine silk thread, today I choose not to care about worldly matters and just breath in the scent of the changing season. Lets just say that in my little bubble everything is hunky dory and that's the way I want it to stay.
Well almost everything.
As we all know winter is the time to really take care of our immune system. The drastic change of temperature causes our bodies to be more prone to attack from those nasty bugs and viruses, it's just one of those unfortunate things.
But there's also a dark side to consider. Numerous studies have shown that death rates peak this time of year. Blood pressure increases during the winter, and, by some reckonings, 70% of the wintertime increase in the death rate can be traced back to heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular causes of death. And, of course, flu season is a winter event, and flu viruses spread more readily once the air is dry andchilly, so take a low dose aspirin daily and skip a day or two every now and then.
My mother always told me to dress warmly before I go outside in the wintertime, otherwise I'll "catch a cold". When I first learned about thegerm theory of disease, I thought she was wrong. Cold doesn't make you sick, I thought, germsmake you sick. But as I got older I saw how my children were affected by the cold weather and I realised that the cold is responsible for many atrocious infections.
Keeping your immune system strong is the only thing that will keep you out of the doctor's consultation rooms. Eating a healthy fresh diet is one sure way of keeping the bugs away.
Recently I launched a facebook site, 'Check what I cooked today' its an interactive site that allows us to share what we eat with each other. Every day I post things I prepare for my loved ones and myself and I share them with you. And as a bonus once in a while I will be sharing what I cook with my Facebook Family.
Go like my site and share your culinary genius with the world. Have a beautiful week and don't forget to keep warm.
