Sunday Feast At the Elangeni
Sunday Feast At the Elangeni
Date: 2016-07-08
Recently launched and revamped, Lingela Restaurant at the Elangeni has received a new boosta Sunday lunch buffet fit for royalty.
With the old carpets substituted for bright porcelain tiles, freshly spruced up displays and comfortable seating, Lingela Restaurant represents a dining venue in a class of its own.
Speaking to Elangeni Hotel Executive Chef Shaun Munro last Sunday at the launch of the new Sunday Buffet feast, he said, "Our dinner buffet is so popular we decided to open for Sunday lunches. The buffet is children friendly. In fact it is a very family orientated affair." Chef Shaun went on to add "The Sunday lunch buffet contains all the elements of our popular dinner buffet."
"When it comes to the menu, it's a combination of the classic buffet carvery, but one of the key attractions here is the live action cooking. There is a live action fresh seafood grill, there is a slight wait but what a pleasure to get a fresh grilled fish, which you have selected yourself. And there is the ever popular stir fry."
Chef Shaun is transfixed when he talks about his latest menu, he assures me that all fish is fresh and he never serves frozen. The Tandoori oven is a wonderful part of the buffetcatering to the visitors as well as Durbanites who love the spicy side of life. Magnificent authentic Indian copper serving dishes have been installed at the buffet station, offering a wide selection of curries, biryani and dhal, with traditional Durban as well as North and South Indian specialities.
"We are preparing authentic Durban curries, we believe are as good as the ones prepared in traditional Indian home kitchens in Durban."
There is also a Western selection of dishes, serving casseroles and savoury bakes, such as Chicken a la King and Oxtailthere is also a Shisa Nyama post, which serves ala minute grilled steak, lamb cutlets and boerewors, straight from the grill.
The cheese and the dessert section is worth admiration, each dessert is made by Chef Shaun's dedicated team of pastry chefs, there is the widest selection of South African favourite sweet delicacies. For this spread you have to come hungry!
There is also a very impressive cheese table, with hand made cheeses by Midlands cheese maker, "The Artisan Cheese from Chrissie feature strongly on our cheese table. Local is lekker and we try to support the local community wherever we can."
"Our suppliers and farmers have exactly the same passion for food as us chefs and it's our responsibility to support them and build relationships with them, especially when we are getting the amazing quality produce that you can see here today." After all is said and done, the stir-fry is still everyone's favourite!
"Our buffet selection is so big, its like being in Disneylandyou can't go on every ride." Concluded Chef Shaun with a hearty laugh.
