Last week the suspect of the gruesome murder by decapitation was convicted in the high court in Durban. Siyabonga Joyiya, 26, was found with a human head in his backpack in the Durban CBD, and has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The Bugle spoke to the detectives who arrested the suspect two years ago.
Two SAPS Durban Cluster members, Captain Cynthia Ncanana, the Nicol Square sector commander, and Detective Warrant Officer Sivan Naidoo, were applauded for their sterling performance in getting a conviction in one of their recent cases.
''I was on my way to celebrate my wife's birthday when I received a call from Captain Ncanana,'' Detective Warrant Officer Siven Naidoo told The Bugle, ''When we arrived on the scene, we did not know what we were dealing with, we thought it was a case of a head stolen from a mortuary, the gruesome scene that met us at a parking lot is Short Street.''
The head was still fresh, it was estimated that it had been severed just ten hours before as the blood was still dripping from the wound,''They were given instructions by a sangoma to cut the head off while the victim was still breathing for the muthi to be stronger.'' Said Naidoo. The first accused was found by Captain Ncanana with the severed head in a rucksack.
''When I looked in the bag and saw the head I almost collapsed,'' Captain Ncanana told The Bugle, ''The face was looking up and one of the eyes was open looking up at me, it was very traumatic and I will never forget it.''
On Tuesday Brigadier Ndlovu and Captain Muzi Maphumulo awarded Captain Ncanana and Detective Warrant Officer Siven Naidoo. They received a special national recognition award for this case, as this was not an easy task to complete. The members successfully arrested the first accused, whom after investigation, then led them to the second accused. They then confessed to the police that an Inyanga had instructed them to bring a human head and that they would be rewarded. Detective Warrant Officer Siven Naidoo said he is glad that all the hard work they put into this case has been acknowledged. ''Sometimes as police, we have to go beyond the call of duty. Our role in such cases is to give the victims' families closure, by ensuring that justice is served. We forget our own families, even the wife's birthdays,'' he said.
