Team Japan Makes History & Yago Wins In Brazil
Team Japan made junior surfing history and earned their first-ever Team Gold Medal at the2018 VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championshippresented by Visit Huntington Beach.
Led by the individual Gold Medal performance by Boys U-18 competitorKeanu Kamiyamaand four additional individual medals, Team Japan pushed ahead of Silver Medal Team USA to take the Junior Team World Title by a margin of 132 points.
Japan's first-ever Junior Gold Medal performance comes shortly after a historic first Gold Medal for Team Japan in the World Surfing Games that took place in September in Tahara, Japan.
The exceptional performances by Team Japan across both open and junior divisions is a testimony to the extraordinary growth of Surfing in Japan sincethe sport's inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Team Australia earned the Bronze Medal and Team Hawaii the Copper Medal.
Meanwhile in Maresias, São Paulo, Brazil the WSL Men's QS 3,000 Red Nose São Sebastião Pro culminated in exciting fashion in front of a packed beach at Praia de Maresias that witnessed Yago Dora (BRA) defeat Jesse Mendes (BRA) by a score of 13.03 to 10.83 respectively. Dora's uncanny ability in the air earned him several scores in the excellent range which led him straight to the winner's podium.
"It feels so great to win this event here in Brazil because I've never won a contest like this in front of the Brazilian fans," said Dora. "It was too bad that conditions changed during the Final and we didn't get the same types of waves we were getting earlier, but I'm definitely stoked I got the win."
