From Man To Hanuman: Historic Spiritual Gathering Comes To Durban

Chatsworth Stadium will host a landmark spiritual gathering on Sunday, 5 July 2026, when Chinmaya Mission South Africa stages "From Man to HANUMAN" an event expected to draw more than 10,000 people in what organisers say could be the largest synchronised congregation of its kind on African soil.

Starting at 09h30, attendees will chant 27 rounds of the Hanuman Chalisa, a devotional hymn associated with strength, courage and selfless service. The chanting will be led by India's Anup Jalota, with Pujya Swami Abhedananda Chinmaya Mission South Africa's longest-serving resident monk presiding over the gathering. The event also marks 75 years of the Global Chinmaya Movement.

"From Man to HANUMAN is more than an event. It is a historic movement of devotion, unity and positivity," says Trustee Pavan Maharaj, adding that people of all backgrounds are welcome to attend.

Ahead of the gathering, the Mission's "Flower of Flour" campaign is calling on the community to help prepare 25,000 rotis as an offering, with flour, butter, ghee and sugar being collected at points across Durban.

Free Yatra buses, arranged with the Hindu Unity Forum of South Africa, will run from towns including Greytown, Newcastle, Ladysmith, Richards Bay, Tongaat and Umkomaas, making the event accessible to those across KwaZulu-Natal. Transport enquiries can be directed to Praneal on 064 827 1403.

Attendees will receive Sindhoor Prasad and saffron flags for the mass chanting, and lunch will be provided. Entry and parking are free.

"At its heart, this gathering celebrates universal values that resonate across cultures and beliefs," says Maharaj.

The event runs from 09h30 to 13h30. For more information, visit https://www.chinmayamission.co.za or call 031 401 7915.
