Introducing Vere Witthoft
The Bugle's Tax columnist
Vere Witthoft qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1992. Vere gained valuable experience when he worked at SARS as a senior auditor for two and a half years, learning the intricate workings of the tax collector.
Vere then took a position at a large multinational construction company for 2 years as their project accountant. Then it was off to London where Vere spent 6 months on temporary assignments in the finance departments of various large companies.
Vere Witthoft joined Roberts and Chaplin as a partner in 1997. Vere completed a 3-year masters degree in tax M.Com (Tax) in 2005 to further specialize in tax. Vere believes that there are 3 main areas of tax:
- Tax planning: To legally minimize the tax liability.
- Tax compliance and risk: Minimizing the risk of SARS levying additional taxes and penalties due to under declaring taxable income or late submission of tax returns.
- Tax dispute resolution: Resolving tax disputes with SARS through experience and knowledge of tax legislation and tax case law.
Tax has become very complex and specialized. It is crucial that your accountant or tax practitioner has the knowledge and experience to guide you through the tax minefield. With the financial year-end fast approaching, contact Roberts & Chaplin on 032 947 1010 and let him help you sort out your tax woes.
