Praia de Santa Barbara's Azores Islands Pro
Praia de Santa Barbara, Sao Miguel in the Azores Islands where local surfer Frederico Morais won the QS6,000 Azores Islands Pro in historic fashion, claiming victory in the Final bout against Mitch Crews, of Australia, in perfect six foot surf at Praia de Santa Barbara.
Stop No. 10 of 11 on the 2019 World Surf League (WSL) European Qualifying Series (QS), the Azores Islands Pro witnessed one of the most epic days of competition on the QS, culminating with Morais' win in the Final. The powerful regular-foot surfer becomes the first Portuguese to make the Final and win in Azores in an event vastly dominated by the Brazilian contingent since its inception.
"I think today was one of the best days we've ever seen on the QS," Morais said. "It was just a perfect day with big barrels and a lot of opportunities for everyone. This is a dream to have conditions like this on finals day, your result doesn't depend on luck so much but rather your surfing and decision making, this is what surfing is all about."
Meanwhile back in South Africa, Cape St Francis, Seal Point, Bryce du Preezand Zo' Steyn, bothfrom East London, won the Billabong Pro Junior Seal Pointpresented by BOS World Surf League (WSL) Junior Qualifying Series (JQS) 1,000.
Du Preez left his best for last, demolishing his Semifinal heat against Eli Beukes (Kommetjie) to secure his spot in the final against Thomas Lindhorst (East London). Lindhorst, who was a dark horse during the event, quietly made his way to the Semi-finals where he defeated Max Elkington(Kommetjie). However, Du Preez was in a class of his own, clinching the title with a total of 14.75 (out of a possible 20) to Lindhorst's 10.75 in the final.
Despite a less than ideal start to the competition coming back from the ISA World Surfing Games in Japan,Zo' Steyn (East London) went straight from the airport into her heats. Steyn defeated her close rival Ceara Knight (Kommetjie) in the final with 14.75 over Knight's 9.90 (out of a possible 20). With this win, Steyn also reclaimed the number 1 spot on the WSL Africa rankings.
