Meet our Local Renegade

Meet our Local Renegade

Date: 2020-02-28

It's on a Wednesday morning I meet Rashid in Alberlito Hospital, I have been told about this super human by a reader and have been urged to interview him and tell his story in The Bugle.

"There is an amazing soul who works in the admin department of the Emergency Unit at Alberlito Hospital." I am told so I decide to investigate for myself.

In the foyer of the hospital I am met but a handsome gentleman with a broad smile and an open face, a face that has seen many hardships, I can tell.

He came to South Africa as a baby from Malawi, the region is populated mainly by Muslims, and in Rashid's previous life he followed his father's religion. However as he was growing up Rashid was drawn to Christianity, his mother was a Christian before she converted when she married his dad and her family, who also moved to South Africa. They too were also Christian.

Rashid Mlongo, aka Renegade, grew up in Stanger, and moved from a relatively quiet community into Hip-Hop and acting. Rashid starred in a feature film in 2014 as the lead character in the movie "Finding home". His most recent acting role came in the form of businessman "Brian Morris", on the Comedy web series "Hot Mess".

Renegade has been a part of the underground Hip Hop scene for some time now, having been a part of the Hip Hop Intellectuals group, which consisted of big names such as Hoodlum (Hidden force) and Reason, back in 2009.

Rashid has two mixtapes (All-star hype- 2005 and KZN's MOST WANTED- 2014) to his name and is currently on the verge of releasing his debut album Titled "Saved", under his own record label 'Renegade music and entertainment'.

"Saved" is a Christian rap album based on Renegades life and walk with God. Bringing an honest, cool and refreshing spin on living and rapping as a Born again Christian.

The entire album was written and recorded over the course of 2 weeks in December 2019 and will be available in your local music store, and on all online platforms, for purchase as of February 29th 2020.

Rashid recently appeared on Metro FM, on the "Rap activity Jam" show with DJ Oskido, to promote his latest offering.

Rashid has many talents but he also does so much for the community. Working in the emergency department is a highly stressful environment; he has chosen music as an art form to cope with the everyday stress.
