The Community of D Section KwaMashu came out to celebrate the hand over of the Inhlakanipho High School, which thanks to the vision of the Mpisane power couple Sbu and Shauwn, has seen a R20 million facelift and the construction of new sports fields and soccer grounds.

"Sbu brought me here a couple of years ago." Shauwn Mpisane told The Bugle, "He wanted to show me the school that he attended in the eighties. To be honest I was shocked at the condition of the school, it looked like a dumping site. So there and then I decided that I wanted to make a difference for the children attending this school."

With the help of architects and a skilled team of construction workers Mpisane's Zikhulise Group undertook the project, which saw the upgrade of classrooms and the construction of new secure fencing, which will create a safe environment for the pupils of Inhlakanipho Secondary School.

The Zikhulise Group also opened a new library, created a science lab, created drama classes and revamped the main hall where future drama recitals will take place.

"There was no staff room when we first came here." Said Shauwn Mpisane, "So we decided to build one and we also introduced a Principal's office and Head of Department's office. We have also introduced and created a reception area. There is no reason why the children of KwaMashu must not enjoy the same school facilities as children in the affluent areas. Our vision was to create a Crawford type of school for these pupils."

As part of the face lift of the school grounds, The Zikhulise Group revamped the whole school laying grass, new tar and paving. Where there was soil, a vegetable and fruit garden was planted to subsidise the school feeding scheme.

"We want to give the class of 2014 and the youth of today the opportunity to retrace the steps of the youth of yesteryear." Said Sbu Mpisane in his speech to the pupils of Inhlakanipho High School. "We want to honour the heroes and heroines who boldly resuscitated the fight for freedom and democracy as well as give them an opportunity to hear and get informed about what their predecessors went through."

The gratitude of the local community is evident in the way the Mpisane couple were welcomed to the school. Songs were sang and poems read out in honour of the visionary couple who have been so generous to the place that has been their home. Their vision is to build a safe, sound and stable environment for pupils of KwaMashu where they can experience a wide spectrum of academic and sport activities.

"What we have achieved here is a bright and clean environment for learners and teachers to enjoy making school and learning a fun and happy place to be." Concluded Shauwn Mpisane.
