Young South Africans Shine In Hollywood
A team of young South Africans comprising 90 of the most talented aspiring actors, dancers, singers, instrumentalists, models and variety artists is making its mark on the international stage at the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Hollywood.
Following a colourful opening parade of nations featuring 1 800 contestants from 52 countries, Director of the South African Championships of Performing Arts, Dr Ellen Roux, collected three awards out of five, for entering the largest team, third place for Best Costume and the award for the Best Group Production. The Nuwe Graskoue Trappers from Wuperthal in the Cape wowed the crowds with their Cape Malay music and traditional Riel dance routines.
While there, contestants have had the privilege of attending a series of workshops with industry professionals. The seminars include practical training, tips on how to audition as well as how to prepare themselves for careers in the performing arts.
The young contestants, who had all won gold in preliminary rounds in their respective countries, were given a minute each to show their talent to the panel of esteemed judges.
The panel included Cirque du Soleil Head Artistic Director Pierre Parisien, Casting Director Harriet Greenspan, Emmy award-winning choreographer and live show producer Anita Mana, acting coach to the stars Janet Alhanti, vocal coach Bob Garrett and model agent Crista Klayman.
Says WCOPA judge Carolyn Moore, "South Africa has it going on! There is more talent in South Africa than in this whole town. I am so impressed, in fact the diverse talent shown here has inspired me to research and learn more about South Africa."
Judge and talent scout, Rod Seagal of EMTN, explained: "Gold medals are one thing, but the real benefit of WCOPA is the international platform provided to showcase talent. The opportunities arising from this event for these kids is enormous. We are looking for bold confidence and a positive energy which we refer to as 'chi'. We can offer training, however, that energy and natural 'performance charm,' is something that cannot be taught."
