Whale spotting at Salt Rock Caravan Park
Sometimes we need to travel very far to get to the place we are searching for and sometimes we can just escape to the closest destination and take a deep breath, sit back and marvel.
Our first stop on our seven day #Vanlife adventure started almost in our backyard at the Salt Rock Caravan Park. Lionel, the camp site manager welcomed us at the gate, hoped on his scooter and proceeded to guide us to our beach front camp site.
The Salt Rock Caravan Park is so close to the ocean you can feel the salty breeze on your skin as the waves lap the soft sand of the beach. The scent of the ocean in this proximity is something totally indescribable. This campsite is virtually on the beach, just above the amazing tidal pools, with views over the Indian Ocean where you can see dolphins swimming by and whales frolicking in the distance. We spotted at least a dozen dolphins in one afternoon, the whale spotting experience in itself was priceless.
The Salt Rock Caravan Park is clean, well kept, and maintained to high standards, and offers a welcoming breakaway, for short and long stays. White lace curtains in the immaculately spotless ablution block, with richly scented body soap, really puts this campsite on top of the list of places we have visited.
And with a full service from the Salt Rock Hotel restaurant, our camping became more of a 'glamping' experience. You are welcome to order breakfast, lunch or dinner, even our sun downers were brought to us on a silver platter in frosty tall glasses. There truly is no better setting to enjoy a sundowner than at the Salt Rock Caravan Park, the experience is surreal. And with visible 24-hour security we felt as safe as we do at home.
Within the first 24 hours we could understand how tens of thousands of people are nomadic in their vans or RVs in the world. It's not only the retirees in giant motor homes either. Some travel on the cheap and live on savings; others take their work mobile, or find jobs along the way to fund their travels. Vans are the ultimate freedom mobiles.
But don't get me wrong, it definitely is not for everybody, in order for you to enjoy a more nomadic lifestyle you have to create the mental space for major life adjustments and change your perspective on life completely. Something we were ready to do.
If you just want to try out the #vanlife experience, testing it out on your doorstep is the right way to start and Salt Roack Caravan Park is a brilliant local destination, which will be a great indication to you, if travelling the nomadic style is your way to travel.
