THE DA IN SHAKASKRAAL WISHES RESIDENTS A SAFE DECEMBER
CLLR Bulelwa Mvulana - DA PR Councillor, Ward 28
December brings with it a host of holiday activities and festivities. With schools closed and some offices closing for the holidays, there is an increase in activities and entertainment in our neighbourhoods and communities. This is a time of the year that we should all enjoy but we know that during this time, there are some safety concerns to consider. As the Democratic Alliance in Shakaskraal, we urge our residents to be vigilant and alert whether they are in the comfort of their homes or out and about. Here are seven handy safety tips to ensure that you don't spend this festive season dealing with traumatic situations.
1. Never walk home alone - It is never wise to walk alone. Safety is in numbers. Also make sure that you walk in well-lit areas.
2. Take care of your handbag - Your valuable possessions must always be kept in full view in crowded areas and well-guarded at all times.
3. Watch out for AmaPhara (pickpockets) in crowded areas - Keep your handbag zipped and never put your wallet in your back pocket.
4. Drink responsibly - Make sure you celebrate safely and do not walk home alone after drinking. Drinking and driving is irresponsible.
5. Be accountable - Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
6. Park your car in secure areas - Park in well-lit areas keeping valuables hidden.
7. Going away for holidays - Get a trusted neighbour to look out for your property. Make your home look occupied and properly lighted.
Lighting is a key word in most of these safety tips and we want to ensure that our neighbourhoods are well lit, for your safety. The KwaDukuza Municipality Electrification Project report shows that in Ward 28, only 20 new streetlights were installed in the period between June & October 2019, in an area that remains severely under lit in some places. Since your safety is our concern, we encourage you to help us speed up the public lighting project by signing the petition online at http://chng.it/wwMh2JZ4
Wishing all our residents a safe and festive period.
