When in Wynberg

When in Wynberg

You do not have to cross the continent to feel like a traveller. You don't have to go very far, you just have to get in your car and drive to a new destination and start talking to the locals.

On my recent trip to Cape Town (and yes we drove there), I had the pleasure of meeting Chris Eaton, otherwise know as, Guys of Design - Naturel. While looking for a desk for my son's new apartment I came across this big funky store on Constantia Main Road.

Exotic restyled furniture on the pavement called me right in.

I walked in and it was an "Alice in Wonderland" kind of moment. I can honestly say that I liked everything in that store including the black dog who came to say hello long before its owner appeared.

Chris is a character, in a caustic kind of manner he will make you feel at home but the sign that is placed on massive red velvet king's throne, tells you exactly how he feels about a lot of his customers.

"If you haven't taken your meds today

Don't use us as your sounding board"

Everything in the Guys of Design store is unique and precious. The deeper you dig in the nooks and crannies of the store, the more treasures you will uncover. Chris, seeing my flushed face and eager spirit ignored my husband's moans of dissatisfaction.

"Come babe, lets go." He urged me on, "Dominic will not like anything here." My husband assured me.

Eventually Chris had had enough, "Oh go on, Go Home!" Said Chris giving my husband a dirty look, and an up and down glare, "Go home already and stop holding that wallet so tight. Can't you see she is just looking " While I burst out laughing, Tomas was not as amused as I, but he took it well, nudging me towards the door.

"I will come back with my son tomorrow." I promised leaving the store, waving goodbye to the black hound watching me from the corner of an antique wooden bench.

Walking towards the car in the parking lot I turned back to my husband and said, "If I lived here I would buy the whole shop."

To which he responded, "Why do you think I was trying to get you out of there "

The next day I returned with my son. Chris and my son connected straight away and solutions to furniture problems were being solved while I was asked to wait on the sofa and asked not get involved. "You know these mothers today have no clue what young people want." Chris said to Dominic, while he winked at me.

When you're next in Wynberg, visit Chris and say hello from me.
