Season of the heart: A symbol of hope, joy and belonging for Tafta residents

Season of the heart: A symbol of hope, joy and belonging for Tafta residents

Date: 2016-12-23
The faces of hundreds of senior citizens - beamed nearly as bright as the lights and ornaments draped on the newly decorated Christmas tree.

Residents at Tafta's Langeler Towers were this week gifted a traditional evergreen from hospitality leaders, Tsogo Sun, offering new meaning for senior citizens, who will be spending their first Christmas at their new home.

Tafta residents relocated from Ray Hullet House in November this year. Due to extensive building repairs and ultimately unaffordable expenses, the building had to be sold. Residents can now look forward to celebrating new beginnings at the newly developed Langeler Towers on Durban's South Beach.

This week, the symbol of hope, joy and belonging brought smiles to the faces of the residents, who were joined by a few Durban youngsters to help erect the Christmas tree in the recreational room of their new home.

"Our beautiful Christmas tree will shed light on the work that all our valued staff and volunteers do at Tafta, but more so for our elderly who were thrilled with Tsogo Sun's gesture," said Tafta COO Femada Shamam.

She added that every light and ornament draped on the tree represented kindness and generosity and further extended the warm spirit of Christmas.

Residents enjoyed a surprise visit from the group of "do-gooders", who spent the afternoon joyfully decorating the tree for the elderly.

" I enjoyed the entire experience of decorating the Christmas tree and enjoying a few laughs with the little helpers, it certainly brought back fond memories of my childhood and my Sunday School Christmas events.

Thank you to Tafta and staff for a beautiful day at my new home ...it truly was special," said resident Seth Robert Pretorius.
