Kingsley Adventure

Kingsley Adventure

Date: 2014-10-17
Our Journey to the Jade Sea takes us through Samburuland where at the base of Mt Kulal at the village of Oltarut, N 02.59320¡; E 037.08166¡, Elevation 562m, we meet with the community to do what we do best: life-saving mosquito nets to pregnant mums and children under the age of five, LifeStraws for safe drinking water and Mashozi's Rite to Sight spectacles for the poor sighted.

It's tough going as in low gear the Landy convoy twists and turns over a broken road tortured by countless equatorial downpours. With me, in the lead Discovery, is William Kimasob - Its memory lane, we've spent years adventuring in these remote parts and as always we get to reminiscing about the past. About dangerous cattle wars and the time on Lake Turkana when an angry croc tore apart the back end of our rubber duck pontoon. We folded it back and tied it up, the pontoon that is, not the croc, with bicycle tubing and completed our crazy circumnavigation of the Worlds longest desert lake.

We talked about the time an army General in a helicopter had been shot dead by Turkana tribesmen - "Do you remember the stomach", laughed William, "when the Turkana opened it up and used tell tale signs to devine our journey - folllow the lake shore you will be safe, go east and you will be killed by Somali cattle raiders." So we followed the shoreline but sure enough that night eating the last of the goat around the campfire we learnt that to the east exactly where we had planned to go 136 people had been killed in a cattle war.

We reminisced about a past expedition in the footsteps of Count Teleki, the first European to have discovered Lake Turkana. I remember we'd been walking in the moonlight to avoid the heat.

Next week we will continue the adventures of these humanitarian travellers, be sure not to miss out.
