Everyone is invited to celebrate Aliwal Shoal on MPA Day

Everyone is invited to celebrate Aliwal Shoal on MPA Day

Date: 2022-07-28

Everyone is invited to celebrate Aliwal Shoal on MPA Day this Sunday at Scottburgh!

Head down to Scottburgh Main Beach this Sunday at 8am to celebrate one of the world's top 10 dive sites, Aliwal Shoal, in support of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Day. This is one of 42 MPAs being celebrated countrywide in the run-up to MPA Day (1 August) which, in its second year, has become a global celebration of these 'game reserves of the sea'.

In addition to being a home to a variety of marine life Ð and a cleaning station for the highly-endangered shortfin devil rays - Aliwal Shoal has also been identified as a Hope Spot by Mission Blue, scientific recognition that this space is critical to the health of the ocean. Its environmental importance also encourages much-needed tourism to the area, with Aliwal Shoal one of the best big game diving sites globally.

To promote worldwide support for MPAs such as Aliwal Shoal, and to be part of the global climate crisis awareness movement, event-goers are encouraged to share images and videos of their participation on social media using #MPADay #LetsTalkMPAs #MPA #MarineProtectedArea.
