Durban Country Club unprecedented victory

Durban Country Club unprecedented victory

Date: 2013-11-08
The Volvo Golf Champions is the European Tour's Tournament of Champions 2014 will once again take place at the prestigious Durban Country Club. With an increased prize fund reinforcing the Championship's position as one of the most prestigious tournaments on The European Tour International Schedule. It will also be the first tournament of the year-long, multinational golfing circuit, and one that features an elite field of proven winners.

Per Ericsson, President of Volvo Event Management, said: "Durban Country Club offers a fantastic stage for The European Tour's 2013 winners to challenge at the season-opening event. We are very happy to be partnering with the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, the Department for Sport and Recreation and the Department for Tourism again. We will announce further details of the event, including a significantly increased prize fund, in early November. As last year, we will host the World Final of the Volvo World Golf Challenge the same week as the Volvo Golf Champions where our customers can qualify to play with the pros during the tournament."

The Volvo Golf Champions is one of golf's most prestigious tournaments and the most important championship staged in South Africa. The tournament will start on 6 January 2014, which will mark, the first official practice day, with the opening ceremony taking place on Thursday the 9th. Sunday, January 12th, will mark the final day and the Prize-Giving Presentation.

There were numerous course improvements in preparation for the 2013 VGC tournament and these all started by the appointment of a professional greenkeeper to assume full responsibility for the preparation of the course. The course improvement was the creation of a short game practice facility for the tournament golfers; this will remain as a legacy for the club members to enjoy thereafter. Extensive work on new Tee boxes, access roads, drainage, cart paths and parking facilities were also completed prior to the tournament. Durban Country Club CEO, Gerhard Patzer, told The Bugle.

In preparation for the 2014 VGC event, a bush-clearing plan will be undertaken that would reclaim some areas of the golf course, thus showing off the undulating dunes that makes Durban country club famous for its natural links look and feel. We are very proud of this achievement and it truly is an honour to be chosen again by the IMG.

There is no half-way cut which means that all of the stars will be playing every day from Wednesday to Sunday. Off the course, there will be a Public Village with activities, Retail Outlets and Food & Beverage Outlets.

Entry is restricted to those who have won on Tour in 2013 or who are long-term champions with ten or more career victories. As such, it features those who are in form and emerging onto the world's stage, as well as some of golf's most popular, well-known and established stars.
