Through My Eyes

Through My Eyes

Author: Kasia Yoko

While the super rich are spinning around in their egocentric universe, the rest of us folk are picking up their expense bills while we work longer hours for less.

After the family dinner last Sunday night my father exclaimed with total disbelief watching the Clooney wedding in Venice, 'Its obscene!' he said, pointing a finger at his temple.

What made it so unbelievable to my father was that right next door to where the super privileged couple was tying the knot, council employees who earn on average 2,500 euros a month are about to have their salaries cut by 500 euros under an emergency plan, after the mayor of Venice was forced to resign as a result of a multi-million pound corruption scandal earlier this year.

But what is $13 million for Clooney to splash out on a wedding? In today's currency conversion its just under R150 million for a three day party with his equally rich pals. My brain is reelingI am so divided, on one hand I want gush at the palatial interiors of their hotel, the romantic Gondola cruises and the opulence of the super rich romancebut I just can't.

There is something sadly wrong in this world today, something almost obscene and wretchedly morbid. While the poor are getting poorer, it seems that the rich are getting even richer.

The sad fact is, it's not about how much the Clooneys have squandered on their wedding. They can't help it, they are just egocentric attention seekers, what gets to me is the indifference they show to the rest of the world where the reality is that millions of people are in conflict and war zones and are deprived of basic human rights.

So while Clooney campaigns for the human rights atrocities in the Darfur region of Sudan, his PR campaigns assure us that his main focus is on helping those suffering from poverty. Hard to believe, yet Google confirms that all, loud and clear.

Look I don't mean to sound bitter, its clear that, he has tried to be generous by donating the money he would have made off royalties for the wedding photos.

I understand that it's the government's role to take care of its people. To ensure that they have enough resources to feed their population, rather than buying arms to kill or fight their neighbours!

There is also the hope that some of this money the Clooney's spent on their perfect wedding, will find it's way to the Italians who are suffering terrible austerity measures and a bad economic meltdown.

And lets face it at least the Clooneys have money to spend, unlike the current wedding frenzy, of the 'ordinary' people on 'ordinary' incomes, spending silly amounts of money on wedding celebrations that they often can't even afford, but end up borrowing to pay for!

I mean what do I know maybe it is perfectly all right to spend R150 million on a weddingmaybe I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed and decided to pick on the fabulously ostentatious Mr & Mrs Clooney? Who knows? And we will probably never find out
